Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major contributor to the global human disease burden. The indoor environment is of particular importance when considering the health effects associated with PM2.5 exposures because people spend the majority of their time indoors and PM2.5 exposures per unit mass emitted indoors are two to three orders of magnitude larger than exposures to outdoor emissions. Variability in indoor PM2.5 intake fraction (iFin,total), which is defined as the integrated cumulative intake of PM2.5 per unit of emission, is driven by a combination of building‐specific, human‐specific, and pollutant‐specific factors. Due to a limited availability of data characterizing these factors, however, indoor emissions and intake of PM2.5 are not commonly considered when evaluating the environmental performance of product life cycles. With the aim of addressing this barrier, a literature review was conducted and data characterizing factors influencing iFin,total were compiled. In addition to providing data for the calculation of iFin,total in various indoor environments and for a range of geographic regions, this paper discusses remaining limitations to the incorporation of PM2.5‐derived health impacts into life cycle assessments and makes recommendations regarding future research.  相似文献

With the rapid development of high-speed rail (HSR) systems, the security and safety of these huge systems are becoming the primary concerns for passengers. HSR infrastructure plays an important role in HSR systems, making the maintenance of security and safety of the HSR infrastructure especially important. Meanwhile, sensor network technologies allow the realization of real-time and all-weather monitoring of HSR infrastructure. This paper analyzes the application requirements and characteristics of infrastructure health monitoring sensor network (IHMSN) through construction of a three-layer IHMSN which is composed of end devices, repeater points, and access points. The physical topology optimization goal of IHMSN is to set the optimal number of network nodes (namely, minimum cost) as well as the best physical connections. Given types and amount of the end devices, a multiple knapsack model is established which converts the physical topology optimization problems into multiple knapsack problems. Based on the different needs of practical application, three different cases (basis case, adding devices case and weight-based case) are proposed, and the corresponding models are built. Some artificial intelligence algorithms and a traditional dynamic programming algorithm are presented to solve the problems. In addition, a general algorithmic finite state machine is proposed to describe the solving process. After comparing these algorithms in execution time, memory, and optimal results, the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm stand out when used to solve the basic case as well as the extended cases. The numerical results show that these proposed models and algorithms can effectively solve the physical topology optimization problem of IHMSN for HSR systems. Moreover, these methods can effectively reduce network costs and provide a theoretical basis for network communication link optimization.  相似文献

The study of granular matter composed of spherical particles is of interest in manufacturing, material, and metallurgy. The viscoelastic and frictional contacts between the particles are the cause of forming the agglomeration. We present a numerical simulation for particles packing with three different kinds of size distributions: monosize, bimodal, and Gaussian, using distinct element method (DEM). The particles are initially put randomly but without any overlap, and then fall down due to the gravity force and collide with neighbor particles. Because of the dissipative factors of viscoelastic collision and frictional force, all the particles finally come together to form an agglomeration. Coordination number, porosity, radial distribution function, and force distribution are calculated for different size distributions. It is demonstrated that particle size distribution does affect the granular packing structure.  相似文献

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is an important contributor to surface water pollution due to the release of acid and metals. Fe(II) in AMD reacts with dissolved oxygen to produce iron oxide precipitates, resulting in further acidification, discoloration of stream beds, and sludge deposits in receiving waters. It has recently been shown that new fuel cell technologies, based on microbial fuel cells, can be used to treat AMD and generate electricity. Here we show that this approach can also be used as a technique to generate spherical nano-particles of iron oxide that, upon drying, are transformed to goethite (α-FeOOH). This approach therefore provides a relatively straightforward way to generate a product that has commercial value. Particle diameters ranged from 120 to 700 nm, with sizes that could be controlled by varying the conditions in the fuel cell, especially current density (0.04-0.12 mA/cm2), pH (4-7.5), and initial Fe(II) concentration (50-1000 mg/L). The most efficient production of goethite and power occurred with pH = 6.3 and Fe(II) concentrations above 200 mg/L. These results show that fuel cell technologies can not only be used for simultaneous AMD treatment and power generation, but that they can generate useful products such as iron oxide particles having sizes appropriate for used as pigments and other applications.  相似文献
